By Mr. Bravin Sakari- Teacher, Brookside International School, Westlands Campus
“I awoke to my first day of school with a peep of sunlight through the curtains. Curious about what this new trip would hold, I felt a mixture of excitement and fear. My parents gave me the comforting assurance that my first day of school would be fun, with lots of great activities and new acquaintances. I was ready to go, having put on my rucksack and grabbed my favourite toy.
The playground was a hive of chatter and laughter as we arrived at the school. I noticed kids running around and enjoying themselves on the slides; their happy faces were beaming. I felt comfortable and at ease because of the friendly atmosphere, and I knew I could be myself here. I was welcomed with wide smiles by the teachers, who immediately gave me a sense of security and worth.
Upon entering the classroom, I was greeted by vibrant décor, well-organised art supplies, and storybooks. The space was cheery and colourful, akin to a fantastical world. With a soft voice, my teacher welcomed me and showed me to my seat, where other kids had already taken their seats. Meeting my new classmates, who shared my curiosity and eagerness, gave me a surge of joy.
We engaged in a variety of activities that helped us get to know one another throughout the day. We listened to captivating stories, created images, and sang songs. We joked and shared our favorite snacks during snack time, which led to the rapid formation of new friendships. I understood that everyone of us was starting this journey with a distinct tale, and we were all on this adventure together.
I was a little bashful during playtime and didn’t know who to approach. However, a person with a nice face approached me and asked if I would like to play a game of building blocks. It all started with that one little invitation. I quickly learnt that school was a haven for inclusivity and kindness. Knowing that I may be a part of something greater and more exquisite than I could have ever dreamed gave me a feeling of belonging.
I felt joy and a sense of accomplishment as the day drew to a finish. In addition to thanking us for our efforts, my teacher reminded us that learning is an experience full of development and discoveries. I was excited to return the next day and departed the school with a joyful heart. More than just marking the beginning of my academic career, my first day of kindergarten marked the beginning of the relationships I would make, the confidence I would acquire, and the love of learning.”
Every child’s first day at our school is intended to be a warm and inviting experience, making sure they feel secure, appreciated, and eager to learn. We recognise that starting school is a significant milestone, and we’re dedicated to making it an enjoyable and fulfilling experience at Brookside International School.
